What does it mean? - things struggle to render relevance

Already I'm distracted, and there doesn't seem to be any help for it. Agency is a concept which, in English (so far as I know, all the Indo-European languages) typically determines the SUBJECT of the sentence/verb. Irritatingly, despite studying linguistics, this is still not at all clear to me. What is clear to me though is that Chinese didn't always require the agent to be in the subject, although Chinese may be changing in that regard. But maybe the concept of SUBJECT in Chinese is not entirely the same as SUBJECT in English?

Clearly agency is bound up with cause-and-effect and philosophy seems to be interested in cause-and-effect as well; at least sometimes. And language is cause-and-effect sensitive as well.

So, from Carnap: T is the set of theoretical propositions {t~~1~~,~~2~~,...}, O is the set of observable propositions {o~~1~~,o~~2~~,...}, C is the set of correspondence propositions {c~~1~~,c~~2~~,...} which relates T and O. Then TC(t~~1~~...t~~n~~,o~~1~~...o~~m~~) is an empirical theory.

The nest issue is to distinguish analytic from synthetic components of the theory. /%why?%/

From Ramsey, replace t~~n~~ with x~~n~~, a "variable" /%?an experimentally verifiable result%/ which can be quantified, then a factual account of a theory is given by showing &exist;X for T. This gives us ^^R^^TC 

Carnap then seeks to impose 3 other criteria:

##The factual component F~~T~~ must be observationally equivalent to the original theory  /%? Why is the notation F~~T~~ and not T~~F~~ ? %/
##The analytic content A~~T~~ must be "observationally uninformative" 
##The combination of the factual component and analytic component must be logically equivalent to the original theory TC i.e. F~~T~~ + A~~T~~ &equiv; TC (I assume that F~~T~~ + A~~T~~ &equiv; ^^R^^TC trivially, although it's not explicitly spelled out by [[my source article|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnap-Ramsey_sentences]]

1.) is OK. (The transformation didn't impact the observational components of the the theory)
2.) is a problem, because the analytic content includes relations such as "is bigger than" which //''is''// observationally informative.
3.) is apparently violated because A~~T~~ doesn't follow from F~~T~~  /% but it's not clear to me why it should %/

Carnap solved this problem /% why was it a problem precisely %/ by making the statements conditional. So, ''IF'' there exists some relations that satisfies TC(x~~1~~...x~~n~~,o~~1~~...o~~n~~), then those relations will satisfy TC(t~~1~~...T~~n~~,o~~1~~...~~o~~n); in more dense notation ^^R^^TC &rarr; TC. This means that TC is now observationally uninformative, so it acts as a valid A~~T~~. /% looks suspiciously like sleight of hand %/ Now apparently we can take care of 3.) by saying, given A^^T^^, infer an F^^T^^ &rarr; A^^T^^. From which it follows, likewise apparently, that A^^T^^ &cup; F^^T^^ &rArr; TC.

@@color:red; I'm not actually very happy with this. I've pulled it from Wikipedia, but I'm not entirely convinced by the article. It contians the sorts of small discrepancies that are very nerve-wracking to the ignorant. For example, why use the operators "+" and "&cup;" for the c.) requirement in different places? Is there a difference, or not? If not, OK, but if there is, how does  F^^T^^ &cup; A^^T^^ &rArr; T satisfy the original requirement? Also, if TC is A^^T^^, which apparently it is after the "conditionalising" operation, then it's trivial to say that anything &cup; A^^T^^ is equivalent to TC. Isn't this just X &cup; TC &equiv; TC?

His attack on the //cogito// is, to my mind, subtle. That there is thinking, is not proof that there is a "bounded", or particular thinker. Assigning that perceived cognitive activity to an individual is simply assuming what was to be tested, i.e. that there is an individual who thinks. As in, I guess, the detection of water in a river does not demonstrate the existence of buckets. (The notion of agent-independent cognitive activity is cognate with the Averoist panpsychic heresy...not my own work)

Claims that it's impossible to doubt existence, because that would constitute a sentence like "I'm wrong in thinking I exist, but I exist sufficiently to be wrong".

David Hume, high priest of common sense. Said, in response to Descartes' claims that God must exist because it was impossible to conceive of a world without him, that it was no trouble to conceive of a world without God. Pointed out that the problem with induction was that the past was not, in fact, any guarantee of the future. Induction lies at the heart of science, and this problem won't go away. It is also fair to note that it's not entirely clear how important the problem is.

__Day 3__ I nearly forgot to expand what I meant by "infinite chain of warrants" - and after this I have to get back to more pressing work. Let's say, I have been studying the spiders in my back garden over a number of years, and I have made some hypotheses about spider behaviour, which despite diligent attempts, I have not been able to contradict and which appear to be statistically very reliable. Do I have knowledge about spiders?

I have a belief. It's true, in some respect - in fact, truth, like warranty, is not simple to explain and seems to overlap, potentially, in at least some situations, this to my mind being one of them. Conformance between observation and reality (but how is reality unobserved? Perhaps that should be, conformance between prediction & reality) seems to warrant truth. That last proposition - how do I know that? Where's the warrant for the truth of my belief that P(conformance between .... truth)? That's the start of the infinite chain; a continuing series of assumptions required to provide foundation for warrant (or truth). At some point that has to stop: I can look outside and say, THEY provide the warrant, and absolve myself of the responsibility, or I can take a personal position that at some point in this chain, some P is self-warranting. People do both; the [[social construction of knowledge]] means, in one sense, that the warrant is socially manufactured.

Perhaps my belief about spiders isn't knowledge until socially sanctioned; it remains belief because no warrant I supply myself can ever be free of self-warranty. There are two self-warranties here; the warranty-it//self// //self//-warranty and the my//self// //self//-warranty. Even though the second might be as sound (or unsound) as the ''arbitrary'' socially sanctioned warranty, it suffers from the pollution of the //self//. Would that be as true in a language that has different words for these two different selfs?

__Day ''n''__ Bugger, now I can't remember what I was thinking when I wrote the Day 3 entry. And it's not clear. Well, it was clear when I wrote it, or I would have provided more details. How to write against one's future stupidity? (Ahhh, maybe more details?) Let me see if I can reconstruct the thinking - I remember when my boast was that I knew nothing but I could make a "new" pronouncement on the same topic multiple times and through nothing other than coincidence that I was aware of, each pronouncement would be substantially similar. Knowledge as a kind of consistent performance: I find myself fading in & out of behaviourism - perhaps not surprising when I read Skinner at about 12. (Pelican imprint, I think; Collins Book Depot?)

I can see no reason why this shouldn't apply to science as much as to philosophy.

Physiology determines the facts of the universe humans theorise. In a sense that's trivial, because [[surely|certainty]] everyone is engaged in a project to determine physiology-independent facts. So, for example, you might replace the named colours with their electromagnetic wavelengths.

But this doesn't solve any of Kleist's problems; it creates a set of definitions & labels, but the relationship between the labels here and the colours described by a person is one of (highly misleading) coincidence. It shouldn't be that hard to see that if the left hand side of the table, the colour names, is a purely physiological construct, so //might// the right hand side be. There is no guarantee that another physiology would describe electromagnetic radiation, nor that this putative other physiology would describe electromagnetic radiation in terms of wavelength. The inability of //our// physiology to think up such an account doesn't render it impossible.

This harkens back to my vague knowledge of Prague School linguistics, and Halliday's functionalism: I'm pretty sceptical about claims that word-order affects meaning across languages; to give an example that springs to mind. Halliday claims that //[[theme]]// precedes //[[rheme]]//, cross-linguistically: but it's quite easy to show P~~L1~~ translated into P~~L2~~ in different word orders. Adjective-noun word order, for instance, to name one. For me, it's not plausible that there is a functional difference. It follows, if I am right, that comprehension occurs at some level higher than morpheme; as if there's some pre-processing that goes on to assemble chunks which then get pushed out elsewhere fore evaluation/response.

Of course, I could be wrong...

If this were relevant, then perhaps a Latinist would incline to Nietzche's  opinion: "Thinking is happening, oh, it's me..", whereas the Francophones are siding with Kierkegaard: "''I'' am here, oh, and thinking too, as it happens...". 

Obviously it's not a //deep// effect, since irrespective of word order, Descartes defended an alternative view; Latin was NOT Nietzsche's native language; etc. etc.. I'm not suggesting that me being wrong entails that there is an absolute binding semantic of outcome order; what I would suggest is that it is possible - well, within the bounds of plausibility - that there might be a biassing affect on initial response which might in turn flow through to an evident impact n a sufficiently large population. Not everyone, after all, is going to analyse the statement, even though this one invites analysis. Despite the invitation though, there will still be reflexive responses.

Beter known as a biologist, of evolutionary sorts, and popular with his students, but not one of the big 19th century philosophical figures. Still, I liked the clarity of his explanation of the problem of materialism and the mind (and conversely remain puzzled by his solution). Basically, he points out that although we all agree with the materialist "matter and movement" program, we can't easily go on to use matter and movement to account for mind, because it is mind that has given us (the ideas of) matter and movement.  (I suppose you could adopt a positivist exit from this problem, if you're feeling up to it) If mind comes first, then you have to deal with idealist problems, which leaves your materialism in need of dry-cleaning. 

I don't think there's a way out of this, except "Choose your poison".

All one can do is define the axioms within which one wishes to work, and carry on from there. It is dishonest to assume that one can generalise outside of those baseline axioms; attacking the axioms is different from attacking the work, and the nature/intent of the attack should be specified.

There's no escape from the necessity of this limiting and simplification. The nature of language @@color:red;guarantees@@ the @@color:blue;provisional@@ quality of its encodings. And there is no use quibbling about "provisional" and "guarantees" in that previous sentence. It's a defect of English that the idea can't be better expressed, not a defect of the idea.

Just to hand - from [[Hawking]] - if there were a GUTE (Grand Unified Theory of Everything) that would imply a Grand Unified Mechanism; that mechanism might not allow the GUTE to be knowable. (Hawking says that it's the theory that prevents the knowledge, but I think it's the world that would prevent it) Somehow Hawking goes on to convince himself that evolution prevents this from happening; evolution somehow guarantees that any GUTE - should there be one - would be knowable. That appears to mean that evolution - guarantees GUTE is knowable - is //not// described by the GUTE - guarantees GUTE is unknowable. So now it's a GUTEEE; GUT Everything Except Evolution.

I'm not sure that Hawking hasn't missed something there.

Not "theory" in the (is it derogatory) catch-all reference to post-structuralism; just, what is a theory? the starting point for this discussion, for me now, is [[Jammer]]'s inquiry into the epistemology of [[quantum mechanics]].

[[Jammer]] starts with T => {F, M, E}. That is, a theory is comprised of a formalism, a model and an explanation/explication. In fact, there turn out to be multiple explanations; an explanation of the relationship between F and M, between F and the world, even perhaps between T and the set FME. To give a quick example, //e=mc^^2^^// is a ''F''ormalism, the ''E''xplanation tells us that e=energy; m = mass; c=the speed of light in centimeters/second, and the ''M''odel then tells us that mass and energy are equivalent

This is a multi-level personal project. 

Firstly, I want to try and make sense of [[philosophy]]; it can't all be [[rubbish]]. (That's a joke, Joyce.) What I do know is that it's so long ago that I first framed the question, "What is the I that says I am", that I have forgotten when it was. In the backyard, probably. At Mum's. When I should have been thinking about cricket. And despite those, maybe 40, intervening years, the question still nags at me. Even though I suspect (strongly) that there is no good answer - in fact, I'm suspicious of the question. Psychology, for all the growth of its claims during the 20th century, seems to beg the question; perhaps that's a sign that my suspicions are well founded. But part of me, here in this little outpost of the Western world, can't escape the //[[cogito]]//. So I'm stuck. Forty years trying to avoid the problem, and still, no way out. I have to finalise this. Which, I fully realise, may only be the finality of saying, well, we can go no further down this path.

Secondly, I want to examine some of my intuitions, particularly about the nature of [[knowledge]] and the nature of [[text]]. 

Thirdly, I need writing practice.

//cogito ergo sum//: I'm sure I wouldn't be the first to ask if Western philosophy ever recovered, or ever will recover, from Rene's pithy little apophthegm. Perhaps that's a little melodramatic. I should probably read it again before expounding at length: I wonder if it's better to read it in Latin (or French) or translation? I looked at the Latin once & it didn't seem particularly difficult.

Anyway, I have a number of objections to "I think, therefore I am". The first problem is the "therefore". "I think entails I am" would be more neutral; less imposing of the appearance of logic at work. Descartes apparently recognised the force of that criticism and was prepared to reformulate it to "I think, I am". What this established, apart from the existence of the "I" that thinks, is that is possible to rely on self-evident propositions as the foundations of an argument: that proved to be its own slippery slope. [[Hume|HumeNotes]] refuted Descartes' proof of god (simply, that it was self-evidently true) by happily asserting that (despite his - Hume's - profession) he found the non-existence of god to be equally self-evident.

Nietzsche's objection was that it was just grammar; of course, Nietzsche started life as a philologist, so it's a point that bears thinking about.

Perhaps "There is thinking, which requires a thinker" would do; but Nietzsche's criticism is more subtle than that: he challenges the "I" to recognise thinking, which is twofold. It assumes that there is something called thinking, and that it can be identified. More criticisms have been levelled, substantially along these lines, by [[Williams|WilliamsNotes]], [[Gassendi|GassendiNotes]], and [[Lichtenberg|LichtenbergNotes]].

[[Kierkegaard|KierkegaardNotes]] simply claims that thinking presupposes "I"; he is happy with the proposition as psychologically true, but asserts that the "I" precedes the thinking. "I exist" is the first thought - precedes thought.

This reminds me of a [[problem|MorphemeOrder]]... 

OK, well, it's not that simple is it? In fact, philosophy has always contested Descartes' //cogito// for pretty solid reasons. But I find [[Hiintikka|HiintikkaNotes]]'s position fairly persuasive; one's own existence is a given. In a way you might say that Descartes exploited the intuitive persuasive force of one's personal existence to ground his ideas of "simplicity" and "clarity" (and maybe "necessity"). The real damage was done with them. The philosopher's common sense...

Do I need to look at the distinction between asserting one's existence, and existence //in essentia//?

I have an idea that infinity, or the battle against infinity, is going to be very important. My intuition is that all "theorising" (which may mean action, if theory in a sense determines reality) is potentially infinite, but it is not convenient to wait for an infinite amount of time to resolve one part of a theory, so a resolution needs to be made; thus the infinite chain is "arbitrarily" terminated. We are seeking a principled way to be arbitrary. Take games playing: I think that he thinks that I think that he think... It's not productive. (They have time limits to FORCE its unproductivity).

This connects to my (said it somewhere else?) idea about (left-dislocations?) He the dog the cat bit was running away chased. Two can be managed easily - the dog the cat bit was running away. Three is next to impossible in real time. So although the recursion (of the apposition) at play is potentially infinite, processing problems enforce a limit. The connection comes from the idea that maybe the brain resists recursion/infinity, and just drops out, leaving you - unwittingly - in one of your early levels. Hofstader was carrying on about meta-levels, in GEB, but I don't recall him making this point.

Knowledge is justified true belief, they say. I prefer "warranted" to "justified". There's a self-righteousness about justified that I don't like. When you look closely at the problems of epistemology, self-righteousness looks like it might be a defense to the general unsatisfactoriness of the project. In fact, epistemology provides a clear basis for understanding what is not knowledge - but you have to defend your knowledge on some other basis.

Warranted true belief. Warranted excludes self-warranted. The warrant therefore is a third element; me, my belief, the warrant. Where does it come from? Either I created it, or someone gave it to me because I excluded self-warranty (curiously, that term appears to have two meanings. The belief does not create the warrant was my first, intended meaning, but also, the warrant doesn't create itself. Is that second meaning given, or does it require defence?)

There is also a problem of in what way a belief can be separate from me, the holder of that belief.  I mean, I could write it down on a piece of paper.  That doesn't seem to solve anything though. What if my belief changed? A curious language problem - did my belief change itself? I changed my belief, My belief changed, My belief was changed...are they three different ways to say the same thing? [[Agency]], what to make of agency?

For me, personally, before (I think) I even had an idea of what philosophy was, the first, in the sense "first" has of "primary", philosophical question was, and remains "What is the ''I'' that says '''I'''?". That's a barnacled old sentence - //pace// Ondaatje - but I reserve the right to be hesitant, to qualify, to re-write. I don't want to disguise - not wholly - the doubts and uncertainties, the ignorances and the errors. 

Anyway, I guess that overlaps with the //[[cogito]]//. 

William [[James|JamesNotes]] said that the details of a philosophy were largely a matter of the personality of the philosopher. He was specifically talking about the difference between idealists and materialists, and he was talking in 1908(?), but there's something unusually balanced about that remark. Or is it just a matter of [[rhetoric]]al strategy? Defuse the tension, reduce the conflict: then proceed to lecture as if only one framework - his own - is remotely sensible. Which is what, in fact, he does. Philosophy, then, for William James, that seemingly well-balanced gentleman, is not about truth. It's about argument. Winning the argument.

OK, obviously rubbish is a bit harsh. But it could have been worse. James Joyce called creative output "shit", and who knew better than he? At least "rubbish" suggests that there was once a form, a structure. Rubbish comes from somewhere, something //used//. And anyway, I'm crawling around in the muck with everybody else, so there's no need to get offended.

Sometimes I think philosophy is a waste of time; it produces no final answers and at best occasionally provides high quality (so at least it does something well) weapons to defenders of indifferent truths. Never a tyrant without a tame philosopher. But maybe there are no final answers. And perhaps it is useful to know the difference between a good quality question and a bad quality question. Excavating the rubbish - well, archaeology is not such an unrespectable profession.

The social construction of knowledge seems to be to be a relatively trivial idea that is randomly abused by people who think it is hugely significant. If it's true - and "trivial" includes truth, as any mathematician will tell you - then all knowledge was, is and will always be socially constructed. Dewey seems to get the credit for noticing this - although I suspect many knew it before him - and sometimes I get the feeling that people think pre-Dewey knowledge isn't knowledge any more because it wasn't socially constructed because no-one knew that's how knowledge had to be created. It's a kind of insane modernism.

Newton may not have realized that his Optics were socially constructed, but that is a failure of his noticing rather than a failure of the Optics. (I doubt, in fact, that a man who reputedly said "...I have stood on the shoulders of giants" was wholly unaware of the social dimensions of the scientific endeavour). If you sit down to learn the Optics, you will know a lot about light. You will have pre-Dewey knowledge, precisely as correct now as it was in 1704.

[[Philosophy]] is about language; it's about what can be said about the world. Perhaps it's more precise to say that it's what can be written about the world, but I'm going to pretend, for the time being, that "text" covers equally written and spoken output, of, let's say, the human animal. I'm also going to assume that there is no difference between written and spoken texts, in this context. I reserve the right to change that approach: after all, if Rene is pissed and mouthing off the //[[cogito]]// down the local boozer, it's not the same text as the one lying around in the local library, unborrowed for 27 years. And at the heart of my views about text is the idea that context is all, a kind of meta-context, both the reader's context and the text's; the significance of the writer's context is more fraught but it has to be acknowledged that at least for some readers, the writer's context /is/ significant and on that basis an apprehension - I could say a construction - of the writer's context is sometimes significant.

Texts are slippery things; even a physical text is a slippery thing. It's not difficult to track down academic animus on what should be deemed to be the canonical physical text; to some extent that reflects the emotional strength of their commitment to the idea that there is one canonical text, although it also reflects commitment to one's sense-of-self. The twentieth century gifted us the idea that perhaps the canonical physical text wasn't a very useful idea. Even if one could be constructed, a physical text unconsumed has no [[existence]]. And, consumed, the text has produced a competitor, text-as-consumed-by-reader-//x//-on-occasion-//y//. Even with this very simplistic model, there's a rapid - geometric - increase in the number of texts.

That's only the beginning, of course. Where is this text-as-consumed-etc? For me, that's a problem which I will come back to, related to problems I have with the idea of [[knowledge]], but let's say that it's somewhere in the reader. Can it be extracted? Yes, but only if the reader becomes a writer and produces another text. In fact, I want to say that there is nothing in the reader unles it can be extracted as text; that's a bit of a jump from where I am know, but I want to give a sense of the destination. //''text''// is everything.
